Innovation has come thru NOTAPE, but will it make zipper tape 100% obsolete?

NOTAPE is a technology combining fabric with zipper. This eliminates the need to have zippers with zipper tape. According to NOTAPE, the elimination of zipper tape will help the manufacturing process by reducing:

  • fabric dumped at the land field
  • energy consumption
  • steps needed to make zippers

No Explanation

As of the time of writing this short blog article, NOTAPE hasn’t explained how this new zipper will work. The press release only says NOTAPE will be integrated into fabric with a special machine. But, this clue leaves readers with more questions than answers.

Questions

Will NOTAPE be a fabric with integrated zipper teeth? If so, will it come in limited colors? Or, will makers need to buy special equipment in order to integrate NOTAPE into their materials?

It’s truly an interesting concept.

However, it takes a lot to imagine how this will work in the practical world. While the idea is very difficult to visualize, it is very inspiring. The creators of NOTAPE speak at length about how much discouragement was given to them in the process of making the product. So, it is inspiring to see how they kept going in spite of all the discouragement.

Is zipper tape a real problem that needs to be solved?

Zippers, in the traditional sense, are a pain to work with. They are a nuance because you have to find a direct match to your fabric. Then, you have to find a way to hold the zipper tape in place long enough for it to get sewn into the project. Once you become used to sewing zippers, however , you get used to this small inconvenience.

Anyone who lives knows nothing is without flaw. So, there will surely be a different sets of problems that come along with NOTAPE. Since the product isn’t available at the time of writing this article, we don’t know what the problem or problems will be. We can only speculate. Will the problem be:

  • the need for a new piece of equipment for integrating NOTAPE into fabric
  • limited fabric choices due to NOTAPE being preintegrated into fabric
  • Difficulty with adding tape free zippers into a pants fly or other oddly shaped item

Only time will tell. Please let me know your thoughts about this new product in the comments section below.
