Sewing machine AI is being promoted . But, there are potential downsides. The downsides along with instructions to this weeks quilt block are below.

In the video, I made a star block from Marie’s Quilt by Marie-Claude Picon. This block was provided in the 2020 quilt calendar. To see more of Marie-Claude Picon’s work, it can be purchased from Amazon here. Here’s how to do the single star block.

1) Cut one 2 3/4 square to serve as the center block (color 1).

2) Cut four 1 5/8 squares (color2). Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of each one.

3) Pin one corner of 1 5/8 square to corner of 2 3/4 square with right sides facing. Sew along the diagonal line drawn in step 2. Trim 1/4th from the line and press open. Repeat for remaining corners to make a square unit measuring 2 3/4ths including seam allowances. Set this aside as we will come back to this later.

4) Cut eight 1 5/8 squares (color 3). Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of each one.

5) Cut four 1 5/8 x 2 3/4 rectangles (color 1).

6) Pin one corner of 1 5/8 square to corner of rectangle with right sides facing. Sew along the diagonal line drawn in step 4. Trim 1/4th from the line and press open. Repeat on the opposite end of this rectangle. Then, repeat same process for the other three rectangles.

7) Now, sew all four rectangular blocks to the 2 3/4 square created in step 3.

AI CONVERSATION

Water consumption

Artificial intelligence requires a lot of computing power. In order to keep computer components cool, data centers use water. According to current data, AI services like Chat GPT use 1/15th of a teaspoon of water per query. This amount of water doesn’t seem like a lot. But when everyone asks multiple questions per day, the amount of worldwide water consumption is alarming. Sewing machines don’t need AI to function. But, more manufactures are adding the feature for convenience over having access to clean drinking water.

Electricity usage

AI centers use a tremendous amount of electricity. This is causing power outages in areas where this was once unheard of. AI electricity grid strain is also causing the cost of electricity to go up. AI is already in computers, cars, and cell phones when people didn’t ask for the technology in the first place. Now, this same water consuming and energy sucking stuff is being integrated into sewing machines.

Job deletion

At the present moment, sewing machine AI isn’t taking jobs. However, every interaction with an AI tool causes it to learn more. And as the AI learns, many small business owners are beginning to question if they are training their own job replacements.

Privacy concerns

AI tools listen and report data. Since AI is always running in the background and listening to the conversations around it, discussions no longer private. While device connected to the web is hack-able, sewing machine AI creates yet one more vulnerability that didn’t exist beforehand.
