Brother has released two models, Brother BX1 combo machine and Brother BX1e embroidery only model. Below, I have briefly highlighted the functions and features.

Normal Features

Brother BX1 includes all the normal features you would expect to see on a modern computerized sewing machine. These features include:

  • 7inch color LCD touch screen for easily navigating
  • 10″ to right of needle, providing extra space for working large projects
  • 7mm maximum stitch width for clear definition on decorative stitches
  • Wifi and an app (Artspira) for designing embroidery and transferring designs to machine
  • USB port for manually transferring designs to machine

Curves

Brother list a few features as standout for this particular model. However, the actual validity of those claims can only be verified by you. First, Brother includes a feature called curve sewing. The curve sewing function releases some of the foot pressure for stitching around curves. It then re-applies normal foot pressure once the needle rises. This is supposed to make it easier for users to sew curves. I haven’t seen any evidence to suggest sewing enthusiasts have a huge problem with sewing around curves. But, the feature is indeed included on this machine for a smooth curved sewing experience.

Lasers

Brother BX1 includes an external line laser guide to keep you sewing straight. On the BX1e, however, there is a specialized presser foot with a laser pointer for accurately aligning embroidery designs. A laser is always helpful to use on sewing and embroidery projects. However, these lasers aren’t special because there are many sellers online who provide aftermarket lasers that can be retrofitted to virtually any model machine.

Couching

I am going to over simplify the word “couching’ by explaining it as merely sewing yarn to a piece of fabric. The yard gives the fabric extra texture and makes it look like a work of art. While the included BX1 couching foot makes the process easier, its not an essential.

One feature users will find very helpful

The overwhelming majority of computerized sewing machines have an app for creating embroidery designs and transferring them to the computer. But, the BX1 takes things a step further by including an application for transferring designs directly from computer to embroidery machine. It requires no USB thumb drive and no cable, which is very convineient.

The embroidery window means everything

BX1 and BX1e models have a maximum embroidery window of 8x14inches. This is a large enough embroidery window to work on projects without needing to slide the embroidery hoop down. In addition, the model includes a 5×7 hoop. The 5×7 size is more of a standard size hoop ideal for smaller projects.

Parts many overlook before committing to a machine

The overwhelming majority of buyers of sewing and embroidery combo machines are looking for a unit that does everything. Unfortunately, there is no perfect machine. Instead, there is only the perfect machine for your specific tasks.

BX1 and BX1e models are ideal for those who enjoy doing decorative stitches and embroidery. I say this because BX1 has a wide stitch width of 7mm for clear decorative stitch definition. This is also true because there are 754 built in stitches and 774 build in embroidery designs packed into the sewing and embroidery combo. This is a massive amount of built in designs to play with.

While BX1 is wonderful for decorative stitches and embroidery, it isn’t ideal for piecing and/or sewing of thin materials. I wouldn’t recommend this model for that specific tasks because feed dogs are wide and there also isn’t a straight stitch needle plate provided out of the box. My best guess is the overwhelming majority of users will have a separate machine specifically for piecing or making fine linen garments.

Overall

BX1 and BX1e models have a healthy amount of functions ideal for the crafter who enjoys working with decorative stitches and embroidery. It truly is a fun machine with a lot of different features for that specific kind of machine users to enjoy.
