TikTok is in danger! You may not care, but it does matter because the consequences of the closure directly affect the sewing community. Just for clarification, let me explain.
The house passed a bill that would force TikTok to sell its company to an American based business. If the senate approves this bill and TikTok refuses to sell, the company will cease to exist in the United States. The bill was proposed because law makers worry about American data being shared with foreign adversaries.
A Tiktok ban would force small craft and sewing businesses to close because so many of them exclusively sell their wares via the platform. However, the closure of small sewing and craft businesses is the least of worries.
The main concern is the vague language of house bill H.R.7521, which could cause the ban to reach far beyond TikTok. The bill is written so vague that foreign online businesses like Alibaba, Ali Express, and Temu could be impacted. For those who are unaware, many crafters and sewing enthusiast alike purchase their supplies from these foreign companies like the ones mentioned above.
Also, many American craft stores and venders exclusively interact with suppliers via Alibaba. So, a ban on online foreign trade could drastically impact the availably of sewing and craft supplies across the country.
