Machine embroidery thread storage is a pain. But, there is one solution that will make things a little easier for the average person with a small space. To learn more, check out the discussion below and/or check out the YouTube video tutorial.

For thread storage solutions, there are only two common options:

  1. Thread boxes
  2. Peg board

Art Bin thread storage boxes are found at Joann and other craft stores.

However, the $15+ price tag quickly adds up when one needs multiple cases for storing thread. There is a cheap alternative available. Some users rave about it, but others complain about the latches wearing out quickly.

Peg board isn’t too expensive, but it only works when you have dedicated wall space to make it happen.

Many apartment buildings and office spaces don’t allow you make holes in the walls, which omits the peg board option for a lot of people.

When store bought storage boxes aren’t an option and peg board is a no go, why not create a DIY machine embroidery thread storage box?

It only takes a few tools to make an embroidery thread storage box.  In order to make a thread box for 550 yard thread spools, you just need:

For the larger 2000 yard + spools, the same tutorial applies. You’ll just need bigger boxes and long wooden dowels instead of golf tees. Also, you’ll need to space the dowels out more than with this tutorial.

Heat up the glue gun and get your golf tees ready!

Place your piece of peg board down on the ground. Then, place your thread storage box right on top. Put a dot of glue and a golf tee down in alignment with every other peg board hole. This will give you enough space to store all of your embroidery threads.

Place your peg board inside the stack-able machine embroidery thread storage box.

Your done! By the way, I was able to fit 108 small 550 yard spools into this double decker stackable. This really good considering how the store bought equivalent storage system costs so  much more.  The thread featured in the photo is assorted. However, most of it comes from this brother embroidery thread set.
