Janome HD9QCP was introduced in May of 2026 as an update to Janome HD9. We will discuss features of older models. Plus, dive into what makes the QCP model unique.
Prior Models
In 2012, Janome release a straight stitch machine called the 1600. It wasn’t industrial, but made for the home sewing enthusiasts who wanted to tackle a few thicker projects. An early advertisement highlighted the 1600’s ability to sew curtains made from upholstery fabric. Also, the machines ability to power through thick quilting sandwiches was demonstrated. Key features of the 1600 included:
- 1 amp motor
- knee lift
- speed of 1600
Janome 1600 was praised for its beautiful straight stitch. It was also enjoyed because of its common high shank presser feet. Overall, the biggest complaint with 1600 was its lack of a feed dog drop. Instead of a feed dog drop, Janome offered an alternate needle plate. It was a pain to unscrew the main needle plate and replace it with another for free motion. But, many put up with the inconvenience.
Upgrade: Janome HD9
Janome HD9 release as an upgraded model of the 1600. The face place was a little different and there were a few upgraded features. Upgraded features included:
- A large foot control for a more comfortable sewing experience
- Brighter LED lighting
- A secondary thread path for working with thick threads up to TEX 70
Overall, the biggest new feature was the secondary thread path. A secondary thread path made it possible to work with thick and thin threads without having to make too many adjustments.

Upgrade: Janome HD9 QCP
QCP has a couple of new features including:
- A micro lifter for making more room underneath the presser foot
- Adjustable LED lighting
- Feed dog drop
The feed dog drop is arguably the biggest upgrade to Janome straight stitch. It fully eliminates need to screw in a secondary needle plate. Instead, you just flip a switch to drop feed dogs. Secondarily, the micro lifter is an important advancement to the machine. It allows more fabric to get under the presser foot without a problem. At the time of writing this article, however, there are no exact measurements available for how much additional room you get under the presser foot.
