War time cuts to the diesel supply have caused prices to soar because 70% of all USA goods are transported via diesel. Since prices for food and other things have increased, all crafters have less money to spend on sewing. In this article, we will review a few ways to keep the sewing hobby alive in spite of having a reduced or even non-existent budget for fabric and/or notions.

The diesel supply is low but that doesn’t mean your fabric stash has to be.

Thrift stores are a wonderful place to find fabric and notions. Whenever you need zippers or even buttons for garments, it is a great idea to wait for the sale day at your local thrift store and go looking for the best notions, which are sewn into the outfits nobody wants anymore. 99% of the time, these notions are still good and far cheaper than it would be to purchase the same thing from a fabric store. Likewise, great fabric is often available at your local thrift store. It just requires creativity and the unpicking of older garments.

Aside from the thrift store

It is always great to visit places that sell bed linens, curtains, or even table cloths. These household essentials are wonderful sources of fabric that can be used for quilting or even making new garments.

Turn to your pantry

Don’t throw away those old cans or glass jars because they can be used to store dry goods. Dry goods range from food staples like rice or beans to sewing notions like buttons. This is a way to save money and avoid purchasing those expensive boxes for storing sewing supplies.

Be Vigilante

Fabric and sewing supplies can be found in the most uncommon places. You just have to be vigilante. For example, painters cloth is often inexpensive at local hardware stores. But, it makes wonderful material for making grow bags to plant flowers. It’s also a material that can be used for drafting patterns.
