Trade wars threaten to change the sewing and crafting community in a big way. This is true because the overwhelming majority of craft supplies are manufactured outside the USA. Likewise, the overwhelming majority of fabric comes from places like China, India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan.
Recap
At start of 2025, the USA imposed tariffs on some countries who wanted to import their goods. The largest tariff was imposed on China at 145%. Then in May of 2025, China and the USA reached a 90 day agreement. Within the 90 day period, 30% tariffs were to be imposed. But, nobody knows what will take place in the future as tensions between the two nations are very high.
What Happened for Sewing Community
In the short period of 145% tariffs, many sewing and craft businesses canceled orders from China. The shift from Chinese manufacturing was immediately noticeable at the big box craft stores. At Hobby Lobby for example, more fabrics from South Korea and Japan appeared.
