Joann announced it would be closing six underperforming stores, one of which was located in Hickory, NC. Before closing, I took a road trip to the store and noticed a number of problems from the start.
First, there were only two employees working the entire store. They looked very tired and over worked. Then, I also noticed the store had a water leak with a hose coming from the ceiling to contain the drip. Poor customer service, due to understaffing, appeared to be one of the problems with the location.
But, the location itself also appeared to be a problem. Hickory is a town surrounded by rural communities. The town itself looks very nice. But, statistics show high poverty of 16.6% and one of the highest crime rates in the entire country.
In addition, store performance for the Joann location doesn’t look good. Statics show Joann has lower sales than essential businesses like Harbor Freight or Dollar Tree, which sells food and house hold cleaning supplies. Regardless of what statistics say, it is still sad to see the Hickory, NC Joann closing.
