My table for cutting fabric has always been the floor because living in a small space hasn’t afforded me the opportunity to have a real one. However, I recently discovered…

Ping pong tables make great fabric cutting tables, especially for small spaces.

*This blog article is, in no way, sponsored by GoPlus. Its simply my honest opinion after using the ping pong table  for one month.

The GoPlus ping pong table I found comes in two separate parts. It’s no longer available, but here is a similar one. You can use one part of the ping pong table for cutting fabric in a tiny space. Or, you can put both sides of the table together for a much longer cutting surface.

The legs are nice and sturdy

There are nice metal legs on the table. Plus, the table is just the right height for a person 5.5″ or less. However, if you are tall or just so happen to have arthritis in the neck, you will need to place the table on risers to bring it closer to your level.

Do you wonder about how to find the correct table height?

Raise your ping pong cutting table to the same level of your ironing board because comfortable ironing level is also good for cutting fabric.  By the way, there are a variety of ways to raise the height of a table. Some folks set their table on books or yoga blocks. But, I use bed risers and add 2 1/2 inch felt moving sliders underneath to make incremental changes to the height.

Cutting mats fit well…

The half leaf fits one 36×24 cutting mat, while the fully assembled table holds two 36×24 cutting mats and one bonus 20-inch mat. The table provides a lot  more cutting area than most fabric cutting tables on the market under $200.

It folds and can be placed behind a couch or even underneath a bed for quick storage.  If your working in a small space and are looking for a fabric cutting table, this is an excellent option. Even though this table is a great option,  I know some of you must be asking…

Why didn’t you just buy a fabric cutting table from Ikea?

The popular Ikea Norden table was smaller, more expensive, and couldn’t be split apart for other uses. I’ve even gotten in a few games of ping pong with friends and family so its dual use! Please, let me know your thoughts in the comments.

LOVE it! My kind of Smart Gal. I thought I was the only person ever who thought using a Ping Pong table was a great idea. I am 5′ tall so it is PERFECT for me. My hubby had a removable PP table for his pool table. I was in need of a cutting table so I put my cutting mat on it and that was the end of his playing pool. oops! When we built our house, he got rid of the pool table, there went my cutting table. I loved it so much that I bought a used (tho perfect condition) fold up PP table for $50 for my new sewing room. My three 5′ x 3′ mats fit it perfectly, so spending more money wasn’t necessary. I use one end for cutting, the other for crafting when I need to. I have a separate L shape desk for the serger, sewing, and embroidery machines. I then turned my 15 year old, $50 JoAnne’s cutting table into my gift wrap station. Hey, whatever works!!

I was thinking the same thing about ping pong tables. do you think it is sturdy enough for sewing? I am thinking of modifying one to have the sewing machine flush with the table.

Most Ping pong tables (like the one mentioned in this article) are very sturdy. When comparing them to sewing tables like the Arrow Gidget, they are virtually the same. Both are made of particle board with laminate on top. Both also have a metal frame. If you get a ping pong table, you will have to cut a hole into the table and fit a piece of wood on the bottom to hold your machine in place. You’ll also need to get and a piece of laminate or rubber to cover the exposed particle board so your table will last longer. It is cheaper to use a ping pong table because you get more table space for less money. But, it will take time to make the table. So it’s a trade of as time = money. 🙂
