I’ve sorted thru several years worth of cloths hangers to provided you with a list of the best budget friendly cloths hangers for any wardrobe. Since hangers keep cloths from bending out shape (extending their longevity) and are essential to making the most of any tight closet space, I thought it important to test hangers based on:
- durability
- space saving qualities
- and price
Here’s the best cloths hangers based on the above mentioned criteria.
Best all purpose hanger: House Day Shirt Hangers – 40 Pack (Amazon) ($50)
Best for pants and/or fabric: Zober Pants Hangers – 20 Pack (Amazon)($15.29)
Best for skirts: Heavy Duty add-on metal skirt hangers – 10 Pack (Amazon)($14)
This is where the 3 best cloths hangers shine.
House Day Shirt Hangers
…meet all criteria for a great hanger because they are durable and sure to last for many years to come. The extra thick wire hangers have channels that don’t allow cloths to slide onto the floor. They also have an optional rubber coating to prevent slippage and eliminate noise.
While thick enough to last a long time, House Day Shirt Hangers are still thin enough to conserve valuable inches in tight spaces. The space saving qualities make these hangers a must have for every wardrobe. Plus, the price is right at roughly $1.25 per hanger.
Zober Pants Hangers
…feel like quality, due to their thickness,. They have a similar gauge/weight to House Day Shirt Hangers and are very durable. In addition to durability, Zober Pants hangers have a thin profile and can allow users to store more than one garment on the same hanger.
Zober Pants hangers give you more options because they have a non-slip coating that makes them suitable for storing pants, sewing room fabric, scarves, plus more. Also, users get a bang for their buck with an affordable price under $20 for a pack of 20.
Heavy Duty Add-On Metal Skirt Hangers
Coming in at the most expensive out of all three, Heavy Duty Add-On Metal Skirt Hangers come in handy if you are someone who wears a lot of skirts. These hangers can be used for pants too. However, I find them most useful for skirts. In terms of durability, the hangers measure up.
After 2 years of daily use, none of the clips have broken. This is saying a lot considering how I’ve tried Target and Walmart skirt hangers in the years previous with dismal results. None of the clips have broken, but I will admit a few of the sharp edge protectors did come off. It has never poised any problems or caused any scratches, but it is something to note.
In addition to durability, these skirt hanger have hooks so users stack multiple skirts in a vertical configuration. Two skirts fit each hanger, which means 4 skirts can fit in the same amount of space as one skirt hanging on a regular hanger. This is a game changer, saving lots of valuable space.
The heavy duty add-on metal skirt hangers costs $14 for a 10 pack, which is a lot of money if you are on a fixed income. However, they eliminate frustrations caused by broken clips and are still cheaper than buying high-end hangers.
Wait! It wouldn’t be a most recommended list without a runner up.
Basic velvet hangers: If you’ve got a TJ Maxx or Marshals in your area, visit because they have quality velvet hangers that look nice and are sure to last a year or two.
Runner ups don’t win first place for a reason. Velvet hangers look pretty, but they break.
I’ve developed a love/hate relationship with velvet hangers because they simply crack under pressure. Thin velvet hangers are great for conserving space, but not wonderful for handling heavy fabric. Over time, velvet also flattens to expose the ugly plastic underneath.
While velvet hangers lack longevity, replacements won’t break the bank. Since velvet hangers break often, I recommend sticking with grey or black as non-standard colors are often unavailable when it’s time to replace a few hangers.
