Home sewing notions intimidated me when I first started sewing. Back then, store associates convinced me to buy a whole bunch of crap. But, realistically, you only need 5 items.

1. Get a good pair of fabric sheers. Cut the rotary cutter hype out of your home sewing notions.

Fabric sheers won’t break the bank and can cut any kind of fabric so long as you keep them sharpened with a piece of aluminum foil. Honestly, I’ve used the same fabric sheers for years without a problem.

Yes, a rotary cutter does make the job easier for cutting out knits. However, its not the best option for someone who is sewing on a shoe string budget. Rotary cutters are cheap, but replacement blades are not! For this reason fabric sheers make it to #1 on the list for essential home sewing notions.

2. Buy a magnetic pin holder with sewing pins included. (That combo pack life is real!)

You’ll need pins for holding together your projects. Then, you’ll need the magnetic pin holder for picking up pins when they hit the floor. The magnet will save your feet from pin pricks. Trust, you’ll be thankful for the magnetic pin cushion later.

3. Get a seam ripper.

Living without a seam ripper is like buying a pencil without an eraser. You’ll make many mistakes and find yourself searching for a seam ripper so you can start over again. Since seam rippers often costs under $1, I’d suggest getting a bunch of them from the home sewing notions section of Walmart or your local dollar store.

4. Chalk is your best friend. Buy it!

You’ll need chalk for marking on your fabric. I like the fancy stuff off Amazon. However, Hobby Lobby chalk and Dollar Tree chalkboard chalk both work just fine.

5. Pick up some measuring tape. Tape will allow you to “Measure twice. Cut once. “

“Measure twice, cut once.” This is the most important quote you’ll gather from learning to sewing. However, you can’t measure your body or even add 5/8 seam allowance to a pattern without measuring tape. You must purchase measuring tape along with the other four items to start your sewing journey.
